DVD Review

Our closest relative, the orangutan, is on the brink of extinction. This documentary features the crucial work of the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS) and their efforts to save the wild orangutan.

It follows the story of Dr Willie Smits, founder and chairman of the BOS. Accompany Willie on his year-long search for the first orangutan he ever rescued, "Uce", and be deeply touched by their emotional reunion. A moment which Willie considers one of his most precious with any orangutan.

Rescuing, rehabilitating and reintroducing orphaned orangutans into the wild is a long and arduous process. "Orphans of the forest" takes you through each of the steps involved from quarantine to medical checks and socialisation to food identification "classes" and strength and confidence building exercises ultimately leading to freedom and independence.

BOS' work to save orangutans through saving their habitat and engaging local people is inspiring. It is clear from this documentary that the work of Dr Smits, and those like him, is fraught with danger. Dr Smits' personal story includes devastating hardships, from his house being burnt down, to his dogs being killed and the enormous toll such a sacrifice has on his family. Ultimately, Dr Smits' teaches us not only the difference we can make to the lives of orangutans, but also the lessons we can learn from them.
