Fires threaten wild orangutan habitat

24th October 2015

For nearly two months now, the staff at BOS Foundation have been battling round the clock against the fires threatening the safety of Nyaru Menteng and Samboja Lestari and the people and Orangutans who call these sanctuaries home.

It is a constant battle, but not one the team is prepared to walk away from until safety is assured. To those who helped on our last appeal to save the sanctuaries a big thanks. Your help made a difference.

But now, fresh fires are igniting across BOS’s Mawas Conservation Program in Central Kalimantan. Already, more than 15,000ha is estimated to be affected.

The Mawas Conservation Program is home to over 3,000 Orangutans and protects 309,861ha of natural peat forest. It is, without doubt, one of the few remaining strongholds for wild Bornean orangutans in Indonesia.

Fire prevention methods were put into place as soon as it became apparent that the situation across the region was only going to get worse. But minimum infrastructure and limited access to the hot spots makes fighting fires incredibly difficult. Extensive areas of forest have already been lost to fire.

Our team in the field has been working day and night to ensure the safety of wild orangutans and their habitat. With the ongoing prolonged dry season, it is clear that we must fight the fires until the rains arrive.

Please help us save this bastion of protection for the Orangutans. We desperately need your support to ensure we have the necessary equipment to successfully combat fire outbreaks.

Some of the items we urgently need to buy are

  1. Hoses $100 each
  2. Water Tanks $80 each
  3. Firefighter overalls $55 each
  4. Helmets $20 each
  5. Gloves $5 Each
  6. Fire Fighting Pumps $500 each

We need your help to raise $20,000 for urgent fire fighting equipment

How Can You Help

There are lots of ways you can support orangutans and help ensure the survival of this precious ape.

Adopt an Orangutan

Adopt an Orangutan

Orangutans are endangered and at risk of extinction. Habitat destruction results in hundreds of orphaned orangutans, who rely on our care every year. You can help by adopting one. Their dedicated ‘nannies’ teach them everything they need to know for when it’s time to release them back to the wild. You can follow their progress through Forest School.
