Koko (ko)

A little about Koko (ko)

Koko arrived on the 1st of July 2002, from Bogor on Jawa. She was approx 1.5-2 years old, with big watery eyes, crocked ears, short dull looking hair and a great smile. She weighed 7 kg. She had been send from West Kalimantan to an animal hospital as a research animal. She was held in a small cage but occasionally let out to play with Keke in a large empty room. Instead of playing they sat and held on for dear life to each other, scared for things they did not understand for things they could not see. After having lived a clean sterile life in a hospital lab, her stomach was not accustomed to all the foreign bacteria it suddenly encountered when Koko would stuff leaves, wood or soil in her mouth in this new interesting environment. There was so much to explore for her… but she ended up with a very bad bacterial dysentery and we had to medicate her with antibiotics after local forest medicines failed. She is a sweet, quiet independent little girl who does not require much attention She is not a great climber, spends most of her time in the low vegetation exploring on her own. She does not particularily likes to play with her new friends and does not much enjoy human company either except for a good tickle…

Adopt an Orangutan

Orangutans are endangered and at risk of extinction. Habitat destruction results in hundreds of orphaned orangutans, who rely on our care every year. You can help by adopting one. Their dedicated ‘nannies’ teach them everything they need to know for when it’s time to release them back to the wild. You can follow their progress through Forest School.
