Martizen (Tizen)

Martizen (Tizen)

A little about Martizen (Tizen)

Martizen came to Nyaru Menteng in February 2001. He was approximately two months old and weighed a mere 1,8 kg. He was totally helpless, his eyes like a new born unable to focus, he couldn’t even sit on his own, his arms and legs constantly kicking and he didn’t have any teeth. When he was three months old he would hang from a branch we put over his basket and kick his little leg while grinning a great toorthless smile. He did his first vertical climb when he was approximately eight months old. He climbed way up and when he wanted to climb back down he suddenly realised how high he was and panicked. He screamed at the top of his lungs until we finally climbed up to rescue him. It took him a week before he had the guts to try again, and this time he figured out to use the fireman method to get down. He slid from some six meters and lost it during the last two, ending on his bum in the soft undergrowth. With a big grin on his face he did the same thing all over again. This is so typical of Martizen, he has turned into a real boy, a little dare-devil making all of us laugh, with his James Bond charms (raises his eyebrown and gives us a little grin) and his uncoordinated escapes in the trees, but at the same time a real fuzz when his favorite mum is around. In January 2002 he was approximately one year old and his last canines were just breaking through. He weighs 7,5 kg.

Adopt an Orangutan

Orangutans are endangered and at risk of extinction. Habitat destruction results in hundreds of orphaned orangutans, who rely on our care every year. You can help by adopting one. Their dedicated ‘nannies’ teach them everything they need to know for when it’s time to release them back to the wild. You can follow their progress through Forest School.
