Sumo (Mo)

Sumo was confiscated in Jakarta in september 2001 and was handcarried inside the airplane. He was approximately 6 months old but weighed 6 kilo! It was his physical apperance that got him the name, Sumo. The captain had agreed to take him inside the airplane but only after reassuring himself that Sumo was not going to bite or cause havock. Sumo happily gave him a smile and displayed his first four front teeth! Though we have Sumo on a light diet most of the time he seems to just put on weight by looking at food. When he first arrived he was scared of the forest and his new friends, we simply could not get him to hold on to a branch for almost two weeks. Now, in january 2002 at the age of 10 months he is not exactly a active climber (perhaps because of his overweight), though he has, within the last couple of weeks, started climbing higher than his usual 1,5 meters. If he moves around on the forest bottom he always brings along his safety-blanket. He is not much of a cuddler and hardly ever ask for attention, except for when he wants food or milk. He is a bit of a loner and often lies with his blanket and stare into space… we can only wonder what he is thinking about. He does, though, love to be tickled and happily displays a wonderful smile.

How Can You Help

There are lots of ways you can support orangutans and help ensure the survival of this precious ape.

Adopt an Orangutan

Orangutans are endangered and at risk of extinction. Habitat destruction results in hundreds of orphaned orangutans, who rely on our care every year. You can help by adopting one. Their dedicated ‘nannies’ teach them everything they need to know for when it’s time to release them back to the wild. You can follow their progress through Forest School.
