Updates from Nyaru Menteng

20th February 2015

In the near future, five more orangutans will be living in Bukit Batikap Conservation Forest. They are leaving the BOS Foundation Orangutan Reintroduction Center at Nyaru Menteng to embark on their final journey to the forest on February 24, 2015. Read their complete profiles here . We are moving orangutans in small numbers at the present time to ensure we have sufficient staff in place to cope with emergency situations and provide a high level of care and welfare along the journey. The story of their subsequent release can be found here .

In other news, following a very difficult few months at Nyaru Menteng, during which we very sadly lost a total of 11 orangutans to an unknown illness, we are able to share with you the news that following extensive laboratory tests, samples have tested positive for a rodent spread virus, EMCV, which has been known to occur at other primate facilities and zoos. We are now in the process of completing our vaccination program at NM against this disease.

How Can You Help

There are lots of ways you can support orangutans and help ensure the survival of this precious ape.

Adopt an Orangutan

Adopt an Orangutan

Orangutans are endangered and at risk of extinction. Habitat destruction results in hundreds of orphaned orangutans, who rely on our care every year. You can help by adopting one. Their dedicated ‘nannies’ teach them everything they need to know for when it’s time to release them back to the wild. You can follow their progress through Forest School.
