A little about Gina (Gin)
Gina was confiscated in Palangka Raya in November 2001. She had the most wonderful long hair flowing from her arms and body like a long vail. She was approximately one year old, but being very petite she weighed in at only 3,5 kilo. Being slightly cross-eyed and together with her long hair and narrow face she is extremely, wonderfully charming. When she first arrived she took to the trees with great skills and determination, but only if her caretaker would sit in a hammock. Gina was and is still insecure. She is terrified we are going to leave her alone and immediately panics and rushes out of the trees with a great heartbreaking scream if we move too far. This is a perfectly normal reaction from an infant orangutan and since Gina has only been with us for a couple of months, she has not quite yet learned that we will never leave her behind. She absolutely adores her new friends and will playfight with them despite them being physically much stronger and bigger. Gina likewise loves to be tickled and will pull our hands to her neck for a tickle whenever she is resting with us in the hammock She spends almost half her day high in the trees trying out new leaves, fruits, flowers and bark.. but with a “crossed eye” on her ‘mothers’.
