A little about Ucok (Ojek)
Ucok was also handed over because of our newspaper campaign in May 2002. He arrived on the 26th of May. The owner was afraid his young son would catch some disease from Ucok. We found Ucok sitting proudly in an old worn out office chair. This was his bed and he spend most of a day just sitting there being fed junk food by the children. Ucok was approx 1½ years old, with short frizzy hair, and an attitude. He weighed 5 kg. He has this air of aristocracy about him, looking down his nose. He looks almost embarrassed if we get him to laugh too much, as if that is a privilege of the “working class”. He loves to play with Fito, perhaps because Fito also has that aristocratic way about him… everything with style. They are probably the only two males in baby-school who never seems to look dirty even after having rolled around on the forest-floor for an hour. He is actually an okay climber and will spend some time in the trees every day… but then as if it is almost too much work he returns to the ground. On the 5th of August he was taken ill with malaria falsiparum, the worst of the malarias. Five individual in babyschool were positive , but Ucok seem to be the worst hit. He is taken his time recovering and has had to be put on IV on two occasions. Before he got sick he had gained a little over one kg, but being sick has reduced his weight to 5.5 kg.
