ANOTHER BABY SUN BEAR ARRIVES AT SAMBOJA LESTARI

Recently, the Samboja Lestari Rehabilitation Centre welcomed a new female sun bear cub. The BOS team, consisting of a veterinarian and the animal welfare and communications team, travelled to the Natural Resources Conservation Agency’s Tenggarong office to pick up the young bear. The baby was found in Busang District, East Kutai, covered in mud.
From Rescue to Samboja Lestari
According to the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), a local resident discovered the baby on a palm oil plantation road. Understanding the importance of wildlife protection, he contacted the BKSDA East Kalimantan to hand over the cub. The bear is not even a month old, weighing only 135 grams. After being rescued, she received temporary care at the Busang Police Subsector before being handed over to the BKSDA.
Upon arrival at Samboja Lestari, the baby sun bear underwent an initial health examination. Overall, she was in good condition, although there were some red rashes on her paw pads. Due to her very young age, she requires intensive care to ensure her growth and health. The team gave her the name Mia and placed her in a special baby bear area, away from the activities of technicians and adult sun bears.
- Mia is not even one month old and needs a lot of attention and care.
- Our caretakers watch her 24/7 to ensure she stays healthy.
Current Condition in the Quarantine Phase
Mia is now closely monitored by our medical team to ensure her health remains stable. Additionally, the caretakers feed Mia milk as her primary source of nutrition and gradually introduce her to other foods. Once this quarantine period is over, the tiny cub will begin her rehabilitation process.
Our team is committed to providing the best possible care for Mia so she can grow up healthy and strong. We hope she will progress well through rehabilitation and one day have the opportunity to return to her natural habitat.
