GUARDIANS OF THE FOREST #1: PROTECTING THE KEHJE SEWEN ECOSYSTEM

GUARDIANS OF THE FOREST

Nestled in East Kalimantan, the Kehje Sewen Forest is a tropical treasure trove—rich in both biotic and abiotic resources that make it a globally significant ecosystem. Home to a wide variety of plant and animal species, including rare and endemic wildlife found only in this region of Borneo, Kehje Sewen plays a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and providing vital ecosystem services for human life.

However, like many forests across Indonesia, Kehje Sewen faces increasing threats. Unsustainable human activities, natural disturbances, and the ever-present risk of forest fires continue to endanger this irreplaceable habitat. Recognizing the urgency to protect the forest and its inhabitants, PT. Restorasi Habitat Orangutan Indonesia (RHOI) established the Ecosystem Restoration and Forest Protection Team, known as RE-PPHK.

A Mission to Protect the Forest
The RE-PPHK team was formed with a clear mission: to prevent and minimize damage to the forest caused by illegal activities, environmental threats, and natural disasters. Their work includes conducting patrols, securing forest boundaries, monitoring access points, and taking immediate action to detect and prevent forest fires.

An essential part of the team’s work involves identifying high-risk areas within Kehje Sewen that may be vulnerable to illegal exploitation. These proactive efforts allow the team to intervene early, stopping destructive activities before irreversible damage occurs.

Conservation Through Education and Awareness
Protecting a forest as vast and complex as Kehje Sewen isn’t just about boots on the ground—it also requires building awareness among the communities who live in or near the forest. The RE-PPHK team is actively involved in conservation education, helping people understand the importance of each forest zone and its unique ecological function.

Beyond formal outreach programs led by PT. RHOI, the RE-PPHK team plays an educational role every day. Whether stationed at a forest checkpoint or interacting with visitors, the team consistently shares knowledge about conservation and responsible forest use.

The Kehje Sewen Forest is a tropical treasure trove—rich in both biotic and abiotic resources.

Collaboration and Strong Commitment to Forest Protection
The effort to preserve Kehje Sewen Forest is not a solo mission. It requires collaboration across sectors—including government agencies, private stakeholders, and local communities. Together, these groups help reduce threats to the forest and strengthen the network of support for long-term conservation.

With a deep commitment to safeguarding this critical habitat, the RE-PPHK team continues to work tirelessly to protect the future of Kehje Sewen Forest. Their dedication ensures not only the survival of iconic species like the Bornean orangutan. It also secures the health and resilience of one of Indonesia’s most valuable tropical ecosystems.

How Can You Help

There are lots of ways you can support orangutans and help ensure the survival of this precious ape.

Adopt an Orangutan

Adopt an Orangutan

Orangutans are endangered and at risk of extinction. Habitat destruction results in hundreds of orphaned orangutans, who rely on our care every year. You can help by adopting one. Their dedicated ‘nannies’ teach them everything they need to know for when it’s time to release them back to the wild. You can follow their progress through Forest School.
