Leave A Legacy
Have you ever thought about the legacy you are leaving behind? Perhaps you have considered preserving the future for orangutans by leaving a gift in your Will? Making a bequest to Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Australia will help secure a safer future for orangutans and their biodiverse rainforest homes. Every gift is greatly appreciated. We direct your bequest gift into areas such as the rescue and rehabilitation of critically endangered orangutans and the large-scale protection of rainforest habitat to give all orangutans a future home.
I AM READY TO WRITE MY WILL FOR FREE
“My gift will help BOS achieve the things I can’t do”
– P. Harris, WA
“We can worry that money we leave to a charity will be well spent. However, having spent ten years as President of BOS Australia, I can honestly say that I am confident that any funds left to BOS Australia will be directed for the maximum benefit of our beloved orangutans. I am personally leaving a good portion of my estate to BOS Australia, and I would not be doing this unless I had faith in the BOSA committee’s ability to wisely manage the distribution of funds towards orangutan welfare in a mix of short- and long-term projects with minimum possible overheads.”
– Tony Gilding, BOS Australia President 2010-2022

SUGGESTED WORDING
Proportion of your estate
Leaving a proportion of your estate means that your gift will not be affected by fluctuations in the size of your estate. Alternatively, you could specify a fixed dollar amount.
“I give and bequeath (free of all duties) …% of my estate to Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Australia Inc in aid of that charity and for its general purposes, with the written acknowledgement of Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Australia Inc to be accepted by my executors as a full and complete discharge.”
Residue of your estate
It is important to include a residuary clause in your Will to dispose of any assets not otherwise mentioned.
“I give and bequeath (free of all duties) the rest and residue of my estate to Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Australia Inc, in aid of that charity and for its general purposes, with the written acknowledgement of Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Australia Inc to be accepted by my executors as a full and complete discharge.”
Specific legacy
Leaving a specified item or items. For example, property, a painting or a piece of jewellery.
“I give and bequeath (free of all duties) (SPECIFIC ITEM) to Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Australia Inc, in aid of that charity and for its general purposes, with the written acknowledgement of Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Australia Inc to be accepted by my executors as a full and complete discharge.”
FAQs
Do I need a Will?
By making a Will, you can ensure that your money, property, possessions and investments (your ‘estate’) are passed on to the people and good causes you have chosen. If you don’t have a will, the state will decide how your estate should be distributed.
How do I make a Will?
You can choose a solicitor or professional adviser to write your Will.
Before consulting them, consider the value of your estate and decide what you would like to leave and to whom.
You can also make a Will online for free right here on our website.
How much does it cost to do a Will?
The cost will depend on how complex your affairs are. Services such as Gathered Here provide free Wills for straightforward situations. Solicitors can provide estimates on request.
Writing a Will may not be as expensive as you might think, and it’s the only way to be as certain as possible that your wishes will be carried out.
What types of gifts can I leave?
There are three main types of gifts you can leave to BOS Australia:
- Residuary legacy – a gift of all, or a percentage or fraction, of what is left in your final estate after all the other legacies have been paid out and debts cleared. One of the advantages of a residuary legacy is that it is inflation-proof, so you are less likely to need to update your Will in the future.
- Pecuniary legacy – a gift of a specified sum of money.
- Specific legacy – a specified item or items. For example, property, a painting or a piece of jewellery. If you leave a specific legacy to BOS Australia, your gift will be slightly reduced as we will need to cover the costs of valuing and maybe selling the item.
To help your solicitor or professional adviser, we can offer suggested wording (see above).
Will my bequest gift be confidential?
BOS Australia will keep all details of your Will strictly confidential.
It is very helpful for us to understand why people make the once-in-a-lifetime decision to help the Bornean orangutans through a gift in their Will. If you would like to share your personal story or why you have chosen to remember BOS Australia, we would love to hear from yo
Personal stories like yours can be a great way to encourage others to think about supporting our future work in their Wills. We would not use this information without first getting your written consent.
