Dear BOS Australia Supporter,
My name is Dr. Jamartin Sihite. I’m CEO of the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation, and I’m writing to you from my home in Bogor Indonesia following my recent visit to Australia.
Every day I see the impact of habitat destruction on the orangutans of Borneo – and I also get to experience great joy when an orangutan is released back into the wild.
Right now, we have 15 orangutans waiting to be released, which is why I’m writing to ask for your help with a gift today.
Thanks to your support through BOS Australia, we have already released over 170 rehabilitated orangutans back to safe, natural habitat over the past three years. This is the biggest great ape reintroduction program in the world – but there is still more to do.
Astrid was one of the three females to be released, and since her release, she has given birth to our first wild-born orangutan, a baby boy called Astro. Both mother and infant are doing very well living in the forest, a sure sign that our program is working.
Orangutans like Astrid have often endured brutal hardships, finding themselves orphaned or kept illegally as pets in squalid conditions. They deserve their freedom and we need to accelerate our release program as a matter of urgency.
But, as I’m sure you can imagine, this is no easy task. The logistics are complex; each release has its own challenges and needs to coincide with the forest fruit season to give the orangutans the best chance of survival.
The orangutans in Central and East Kalimantan need your help now more than ever to ensure this work can continue. Please send your kind gift today.
Why we need your support now
As orangutans grow older, it becomes more and more difficult for them to learn the skills required to survive in the wild. So it’s vital that we reintroduce individual orangutans as soon as they are ready to ensure they do not lose their forest skills. If I can raise $75,000 by the end of June we will be able to release another 15 orangutans back to the wild. Please, send your tax deductible gift today.
I thank you in advance for your support.

Every day we are making progress to improve the lives of Borneo’s vulnerable orangutans:
– We currently care for over 700 wild born, orphaned or displaced orangutans within our centres in East and Central Kalimantan, but many more need our help.
– During 2012 we commenced a major new reintroduction program, releasing Bornean orangutans from our rescue and rehabilitation centre at Nyaru Menteng into the Bukit Batikap Conservation Forest.
– Already, two of our rehabilitated orangutans, Astrid and Monic, have given birth to baby orangutans after their release into the wild at Batikap. These births are a major milestone for our reintroduction programs and a significant indicator of the adaptation success of our orangutans.
– Every effort is made to release our orangutans back into their local environment – recent releases Yayang and Sayang were transported all the way to East Kalimantan after DNA results showed they actually belonged to a sub-species from that area.
