URGENT- Send a message to Woolworths
It has been heartening to see a lift in public awareness in recent months regarding the damage that palm oil is causing to orangutan habitat. The admission by Cadbury that it got it wrong in adding palm oil was clear evidence that consumer pressure is effective.
And so now to the next campaign. Woolworths has reduced the use of palm oil in its Select range food products and has committed to working through the Homebrand range. However it admits to challenges in removing palm oil including performance attributes of alternatives, nutritional issues and increased costs.
It is now about to review its policy given the progress made by the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) in setting standards and the fact that certified sustainable palm oil is available along with growing concerns with regard to replacement of palm stearin with alternatives with trans fats.
It has initiated a forum on 30 September to discuss all different perspectives including health and nutrition, environment groups and industry representatives. The Palm Oil Action Group will be represented.
We want our representatives to deliver at least 500 letters requesting that if Woolworths is to use palm oil, that it be labelled and, most importantly, certified sustainable palm oil only. Merely sourcing palm oil from RSPO members is not sufficient.
Can you please spare just 5 minutes to download and print the attached letter. Personalise the middle section (i.e. why you want Woolworths to take this action), sign it and add your name and address in the top right hand corner.
You can either scan it and email back to Anasuya Claff at anasuya@palmoilaction.org.au or fax it to her on (02) 6624 6618 with a cover sheet, marking it to her attention.
Or you can post it to:

But be aware that Goonellabah takes an added two days from Sydney and letters need to arrive by Friday 25th September.
Remember to tell friends and family to make their opinion known too and let’s make sure that Woolworths is fully informed of our views!
