Pre-Release Salat Nusa Islands Finally in Use

BOS Foundation Nyaru Menteng’s goal of utilising the Salat Nusa islands as a new pre-release area for rehabilitated orangutans has finally been achieved, with last week’s release of 12 Forest School graduates for the first time to Badak Kecil Island, in Pulang Pisau Regency, Central Kalimantan.

The BOS Foundation Enrichment team in Samboja Lestari and Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Reintroduction Programs picked up new knowledge in building more enrichment infrastructures, thanks to the Shape of Enrichment who conducted workshop series in Samboja Lestari and Nyaru Menteng the past 2 weeks.

Baby Kejora

Very sadly, young orphaned orangutans keep arriving. On February 1st, the BOS Foundation once again collaborated with the Central Kalimantan BKSDA to rescue another baby.

Help us build a new baby house

The recent forest fires and haze have left many young orangutans orphaned and we have already rescued 6 infants in the last few weeks bringing our baby group to 22 orangutans. Even more are expected to arrive and our current Baby House is too small and insufficient for our needs.

BOS Foundation transforms part of Salat Island

In trying to meet the goals specified in the Indonesian Orangutan Conservation Strategy and Action Plan (2007), the BOS Foundation with the support of the local community is trying to utilise a small part of Salat Nusa island located in the estuary of Kahayan River as an orangutan conservation area, as well as to protect environmental services rendered by this essential ecosystem.

Challenges of orangutan release

In 2007, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, launched a national program called “Orangutan Indonesia: Conservation Strategies and Action Plan”. This program was designed by orangutan experts and outlined a series of actions and strategies needed to protect orangutans in Sumatra and Kalimantan over a 10 year period, circa 2010 to 2017.
