Our Vision

Our vision is a world where orangutans are free from the threat of extinction and can live in the wild, unharmed by humans.

533
Orangutans have been released
back to their home.
359
Orangutans are being cared for in
our two sanctuaries.

Adopt an orphaned orangutan

Orangutans are on the brink of extinction. Help provide the care and rehabilitation
they need to return to the wild.

The Problem

There are numerous threats to the viability of the remaining wild orangutan population in Indonesia and Malaysia.  The primary threat is the loss of habitat with up to 80% of suitable forest in Indonesia and Malaysia having been lost in the past 20 years. Other threats, which often go hand-in-hand with the destruction of the rainforest, are the illegal pet trade and poaching.

You’ll receive updates from our orangutans, stories from our sanctuaries and learn more about our
work to save these beautiful creatures.

We are fascinated and credit the researchers who observed a male Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) named Rakus self-treating his facial wound using a biologically active plant.

The biologists from the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, Germany, and Universitas Nasional, Indonesia, say this is the first systematically documented case of active wound treatment with a plant species known to contain biologically active substances by a wild animal.

The study took place in the Gunung Leuser National Park in South Aceh, Indonesia. On June 22, 2022, the research team first noticed that Rakus had a fresh wound on his right flange and inside his mouth.

On June 25, Rakus selectively ripped off leaves of a liana with the common name Akar Kuning (Fibraurea tinctoria), chewed on them, and then repeatedly applied the resulting juice onto his wound. Lastly, he entirely covered the wound with the chewed leaves. By June 30, the wound was closed; by August 25, it was barely visible.

It should be a wake up call for Us as a species.. that we are not the top of the food chain or the most intelligent species. We are just the genetic mistake that has survived long enough to to be cancer destroying this world .. All animals on this planet are highly intelligent and through our ignorance and stupidity we have failed to see this.

I hope this makes people realise that animals are just as intelligent as we are, and deserve the same rights.

They are intelligent, thinking, feeling beings, we do not give credit to creatures because of our ignorance and arrogance thinking we are above them.

They are so intelligent! I’m just amazed at the things they do. 🫶🏻❤️

The intelligence of animals never ceases to amaze! It also feels like a beautiful reminder that all living things rely on the ecosystems around them to survive. 💕

Humans think we are the only ones who know anything 🙄

So smart! What a great thing to witness!

How amazingly bright he is! 👏

Animals are sure intelligent beings. Even cats do this too. They eat some grass leaves 🍃 when they have stomach troubles i guess. I observed it my own cat.

Proving planet of the apes once again, orangutans being the medical professionals of the species.

That is amazing!! They are so intelligent 💚

Dumb animals - I don't think so 💕❤️💕

We can learn much from the primates!

Amazing and interesting!!

Such a beautiful creature! 🧡

My favourite animal

My absolute favourite creature ❤️❤️

So einfach kann Heilung sein. Die Natur zeigt immer wieder, dass sie uns heilen kann😁

Intelligent creatures!

Amazing

Vis medicatrix naturae

yes, primate is smarter than what human think they are

Corey super cool!!!

It's not a surprise, orangutans are quite intelligent and wise.

Very good students! They are very supportive of each other...

I just want to hug every single orangutan there are so cute especially baby ones one of my favourite animals ☺️

Love the way they support each other when they are afraid or uncertain.

Love the way you teach them these important skills. The way they put their arms around each other, so sweet 🧡

They look out for each other when there is danger about They are all so precious

Those beautiful animals break my heart

Get rid of of the music.

That's it run away from the danger

They are so cute

Awwwww 🥰

Love how they quickly each grab a handful of fruit first, then scamper away. So cute

It's Alba's rescue #anniversary!😍

It was an international #sensation when we rescued the only known #albino #orangutan on 29 April 2017.

After receiving a tip about a caged orangutan, the BOS team found her kept as a pet in a village.

Alba spent almost two years in our Nyaru Menteng centre before we returned her to #OrangutanFreedom on 19 December 2018.

Check out this beautiful video of our beloved Alba!
